I finished the race in 6hrs and 4 mins. a far cry from my 2:30 target. I sorely under-estimated the course and paid the price, it was more of a trek than a run if you ask me. But it was definitely 100% fun! I met a lot of people, made knew friends and got to see a new side of the Philippines.
I started the race with my daughter and got separated from her for the first leg of the course since she wasn’t allowed to climb up Mt. Isarog; since the trail was too treacherous. I met up with her at the 6km or 8km (the first water station) then we finished the race from there. I carried her on my shoulders most of the way, I let her walk several time so she can rest her legs. I honestly don’t know how I managed to run the first part of the course for 2 hrs, then carry my daughter for another 4hrs to the finish line. It was just one foot in front of the other. The only thought running through my head then was “I have to cross the finish line with Yz!“… We managed to cross the finish line, even though it was way off the time limit of 4:30. But I really didn’t care any more.
I failed in setting a decent time for my first 22km trail run event, but I feel I gained the resolve and metal toughness that will make the next race a walk in the park. I just hope my daughter will remember this experience, and may it help her through tough times ahead. She may not remember the words I tell her now, but I hope she will always feel that I will always be there for her.
All in all, it was a great vacation, and a hell of a pre 4th and 28th birthday and mother’s day celebration for us!
