I started tuning to NU 107 when I was in grade school. I remember Gabriel an old drinking buddy asked me to listen to Sepultura’s Ratamahatta on the nightly countdown. From that night on I was an avid listener. I remember getting a clock radio and tuning it to NU 107 trying to wait for the midnight countdown before falling asleep… I couldn’t sleep without that clock radio. Then when I woke up I’d listen to “The morning show with Jake” which later turned into “The morning show with Jake and Joey“. I’d sometimes if not most of the time bring a pocket radio to school when I didn’t feel like listening to my teachers. (I remember almost getting caught shoplifting at the local grocery for AA batteries for it lol!)
Back then the NU Rock awards were invitational. Thankfully my Uncle Mario always got invites which he gladly gave to us. San Miguel Beer was still the sponsor then; their events were more organized back then. You’d also get kits when entering the venue of the rock awards: stickers, newsletters, key chains etc. It was a great venue to rub shoulders with rock gods back then… when it wasn’t too crowded.
I stopped listening to NU sometime 2004-2005 when they changed their roster a bit and catered a bit more to the pop masses. Then they started on having greetings and requests on air… which left a bad taste in my mouth.
Now 5 or so years later Their closing their doors… It was a blast! and nice choice for their last song: Ang Huling El Bimboby Eraserheads… /me sheds a tear.
