I just bought myself a Nokia C3 (a.k.a. my black blueberry) yesterday for 6000PHP (147USD) at the Nokia shop in Megamall. I was originally in the market for a factory unlocked iPhone 4, but I was dismayed by the sky rocketing local prices. The local demand for factory unlocked iPhone 4′s is getting bigger, and with supply being scarce sellers are jacking up the prices. I know the iPhone is an impressive device but it still doesn’t justify the outrageous prices… I mean they get it from Singapore for roughly 34,000PHP for the 32gb model, then they sell it here for 45,000-50,000 PHP …and they can get it cheaper it they get it from Hong Kong. So I ended up trying out the Nokia C3.
Despite my initial reservations about it, the Nokia C3 turned out to be a really good mobile device. It doesn’t have anything flashy or hi-tech, but you get the bare essentials of a mobile phone:
- a 2.4 inch TFT 256k color display (which is quite visible under under sunlight)
- a threaded display of your SMS’
- 3.5 mm headphone jack
- wireless networking (wifi)
- a decent qwerty keypad
- basic internet connectivity
- Chatting
- Yahoo Messenger
- Google Talk
- Mobile surfing
- an audible loud speaker and media player application
- expandable microSD card slot
The qwerty keypad takes some getting use to, but when you get the hang of it you’ll find it easier to text whole proper sentences with actual words. The keypad could also be improved upon compared to more expensive models. A volume rocker and an LED flash would’ve been the icing on the cake as well.
Despite these minor shortcomings I am still happy with the purchase. I don’t think you can get a better mobile device with similar features and pricing. At the end of the day it lets me do what I actually need to do with a mobile device namely:
- send lots of SMS’
- call
- listen to my audiobooks
- double as my calculator and calendar
- send emails and visit facebook/twitter on occasions.
