Nature Valley: our first run

Nature Valley Run with yz

Nature Valley Run with yz

Despite only having 4 hours of sleep for the past 4 days I managed to show up for the Nature Valley run. It was the first event my daughter will be joining and I didn’t want to miss it. As usual I joined the 10km event while Yz and Fedhz joined the 3km event.

Personally I had a lousy run, I felt nauseous and very weak; but I soldiered on! From the 1st kilometer every part of my body wanted to quit and just take a taxi home. Though I said to myself at least finished the race, to set an example for my daughter. 40 minutes in I passed the 8km point, I was looking to finish in under 50 minutes when I saw my daughter. I decided to relax and just enjoy the remaining 2km of the race… I can be competitive some other day. I may not have reached my goal of running 10km in 45 minutes; but I learned how to dig deep and carry on amidst physical and mental adversity… something that will definitely come handy in the future.

We ended up brisk walking the last 2 km which took us about 30minutes. I am very proud that Yz was able to finish the race amidst her complaints. For a kid who just turned 3 this month I think that is a really big achievement. She may not appreciate these things now, but I am very confident that in the future she will learn to appreciate it and reap invaluable experiences and life lessons from running.

I can’t wait for her to grow up and run with her… maybe join marathons with her and 50km trail runs.
