VOIP vs Skype

Voice calls have proliferated over the internet in the past several years. With Skype leading the trend and big name companies such as: Yahoo!, and Microsoft jumping on the band wagon. It has drastically changed how we communicate online, from local BBS (Bulletin Board Systems), to IRC (Internet Relay Chat), to emails, to instant messaging and now actual voice conversations with video feeds.

On the other end of the spectrum there is VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). It’s basically a dedicated phone service transmitted over the internet. All you need is a converter to enable your normal land line based phone to connect to VOIP providers or purchase VOIP specific phones such as Avaya business VOIP phones. But some VOIP providers require you to have a specific handset in order to use their service… and of course a VOIP subscription.

In terms of which one is better, will ultimately depend on its application and the internet architecture in your area. Both of these technologies still fall back on the internet. My personal choice would always be the free services though.
