Skype just updated yesterday to version 4.2.0.155 and I noticed that it isn’t minimizing to the system tray (Notification Area) anymore… like it used to before the update. I’m running Windows 7 (x64) right now and I found a workout around to make it work again:
- Locate your skype,exe file
- Right click on it then select properties
- Go to the Compatibility tab then select Windows (Vista Service Pack 2)
- Restart Skype… viola!

Does Skype for Windows have command line options?
Yes, you can use these options:
/nosplash – do not display splash screen when Skype starts
/minimized – Skype is minimized to system tray when it starts
/callto:nameornumber – call the specified Skype Name or SkypeOut number
/shutdown – close Skype
/secondary – allows you to start an additional skype.exe instance
Actually there is a built-in option to make Skype disappear from taskbar:
1. In Skype, go to “Tools -> Options”
2. Click on “Advanced” tab to go to “Advanced” settings
3. Uncheck the “Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in” option
