my Samsung Corby Pro (B5310)

Samsung Corby Pro (B5310)

Samsung Corby Pro (B5310)

I recently purchased a  Samsung Corby Pro (B5310) for 12,500PHP (278USD)  at Samsung Mobile in Megamall. All I can say is: it’s one of the best phones I’ve ever owned! It isn’t a hi-end phone like the iPhone, or the Omnia 2 but it does deliver on the commonly used features people look for in a mobile device at an affordable price point… Something other mobile manufacturers have miserably failed at.

Here are some of the features which persuaded me to forgo with the purchase:

  • 320×240 TFT resistive touch screen with 16M colors
  • qwerty keyboard
  • connectivity:
    • Wifi b/g
    • 3G
    • Bluetooth
    • GPS
  • built in email and IM client
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • clear fonts (for people with poor eyesight)
  • …and did I mention the price tag?

Those were mainly the things I really appreciated with the phone. Once I configured it to send/receive emails from my gmail account I was just hooked! It does lack variety in terms of applications and games, but the bare essentials are there. You can do your facebook, watch youtube videos, check your email, do some instant messaging and what not. What it lacks in variety it makes up for with it’s price and the well polished user interface bundled with the phone. Personally I don’t think you can ask anything better for 12,000PHP.

you can try BSD International Mobile in megamall 635-7546 to 47 that’s where I bought mine. That’s on the 4th floor of cyberzone. There’s also a Samsung shop there beside Toshiba you can check out.

I was just looking for information about the Corby Pro and your blog showed up. I’d like to ask how the wifi connectivity is on the Corby Pro. And the GPS too.

Thanks!

12 mike February 14, 2010 at 5:45 pm

THe wifi is decent, you can connect to most wifi hostspots available in the metro. The GPS on the other hand needs an internet connection to work and it not as reliable as other dedicated GPS devices… The accuracy of it is in the hundred meter mark which :(

sir mike have you tried video calling on your corby pro? did it auto shut off or is it fine?

Reply

16 mike February 22, 2010 at 5:05 pm

nope I haven’t since I don’t have anyone to call using that feature. If you are experiencing problems with it you may want to update your firmware.

Reply

17 jv February 22, 2010 at 5:24 pm

i don’t have use for it either but my mom bugged me to try it out and when we did it auto shut off so she insisted we returned and refunded it. Since then, went to different stores tried out 3 brand new units of corby pro and they had the same problem.

Reply

18 mike February 22, 2010 at 5:26 pm

thanks for the info, hmm… well I guess it’s Samsung’s problem. But you still might want to try updating the firmware, I guess it’s worth a shot.

Reply

actually went to samsung before i refunded. no firmware yet. i really liked the phone but my mom wont let me buy the same unit.

Reply

39 mike March 4, 2010 at 5:39 am

Not sure why it can’t download the data, it’s most probably due to your wifi connection. Either way the GPS+ is disappointing, I get my location within a 100 meter radius.

That simply means you aren’t getting through to your wireless network. Make sure you have your your router setup properly, WEP and WPA authentication is supported by corby so it should work fine. I have mine set to WPA Personal for my home network.

I just purchased my Samsung Corby Pro (B5310) yesterday. This morning I successfully configured my wifi with our home router that has a password. I have been using it for an hour or two. Then when I tried to use the web again, it said the I was disconnected. So I went to the wifi widget and checked. When I tried to connect to our home wifi again, it says “authentification failed”. I tried several times, entering the correct password every time. But it doesn’t wok. We haven’t changed our password. So what’s problem? Please help. Btw, the router works because I can connect to it with my laptop and iTouch.

this never happened to me but check your corby’s wifi settings if they have the same authentication setting e.g. WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc. if all that checks out and you still get an authentication failed try restarting your router. If that still fails, the problem might be with your unit.

Just got the same problem. Try to reset the settings. I reset my phone and it went well. In my case, i guess it’s a virus since i have stored office documents in my mobile phone and after viewing a file my phone restarts periodically. I tried removing the battery, then sim card and memory card but resetting the phone did the job. If you still encounter the problem try to go to a service center, I suggest to memo express where you bought your phone.

Im having problems with my cartoon theme. On the wallpaper included, the middle wallpaper (you know how there are like three sides of the screen) anyway, the sky turns bright during the day and dark during the night. and there are birds perched on the tree. now my problem is, the birds on my phone are always sleeping (with ZZzz’s). I saw a corby phone with awake birds. so i figure these birdies should be awake sometime either day or night. but they’re not. theyre sleeping all the time! my concern might sound crazy, but i just want the birdies to wake up when theyre supposed to and not act all dead :(

ive tried looking for settings and all but cant find any. did not find anything on the net with the same problem. so either theyre really always sleeping for corby pro. or im the only one concerned.

Hi. I have a question. If you are connected in the internet through wifi, can you use your widgets for facebook, youtube, etc. for free?

And when you receive messages, can your message be saved in the phone memory directly and not in the sim memory?

Thanks!

Reply

79 anzhelika June 18, 2010 at 3:48 am

Yes, just as long as your wifi is enabled and connected you can use those widgets for free.

As for the messages, I’m not sure but in my case they’
re randomly saved in my phone or sim memory. =(

So, I tried another version (2.3.2), but it didn’t work out. Now am not able to return back to the google maps version which was already there on the mobile (3.0.2). Try looking for the original app online and installing it, or go to Samsung and have the firmware re-installed. I got my google maps to work but via the wifi.
