It’s been a little over a week now since I tried out Sky cable’s cable internet broadband service. The trial was offered to me for free when I subscribed to their SkyCable Select cable tv package which was 280PHP (6USD) a month. The trial is good for 15 days upon installation, and you are required to make a 1,000PHP (22USD) deposit for the modem (the deposit can be refunded if you decide to discontinue the trial or not avail of their broadband service) . So I accepted the offer and opted to try out their 3mbps package which is 1,999PHP monthly (45USD) excluding your cable tv bill.
speedtest - sky broadband
As advertised, you do have fast download speeds. I experienced up to 300+kbps on torrent downloads and selected http/ftp downloads… but the uploading speed is a joke. Aside from this the speeds aren’t consistent. they often drop down to 20+kbps depending on the time of day, and the connection isn’t reliable.
My Grandmother has a PLDT myDSL connection of 512kbps for only 1,299PHP (29USD) inclusive of your phone bill, which I use whenever my sky broadband connection is dismal. The burst speeds aren’t are as fast as sky but you maintain a constant download speed of around 45kbps, and the upload speed is decent for the money.
Reliability and cost are my primary criteria for choosing my ISP, now that I have tried both connections at the same time my vote goes to PLDT. 1,300PHP monthly for a decent 512kbps connection with a phone line against 2,000PHP monthly for a 3mbps, PLDT just brings more value to the table compared to sky broadband. Not to mention that despite the 3mbps max speed of sky broadband online games and instant messaging services surprisingly do not perform well… it is actually disappointing.

so what do you prefer? pldt’s mydsl? i’m having plan 990 the landline with dsl w/c comes with up 384mbps…but apparently i was having a hard time downloading from megaupload ‘cos it takes too much time to download a movie with 300mb file size..it takes me 2 hours…at an average speed of 40kbps of download.
That’s decent if you ask me, but if you really wanna try out Sky’s broadband service go ahead and see for yourself.
i’m going back to PLDT myDSL since skybroadband is a big pain in the a**.. the only time that i can actually maximize my 3mbps connection is at dawn (roughly around 4-6am) and when i try to download at megaupload at around 8-9pm, i only get around 8-30kbps of speed.
not to mention frequent disconnection, lag, and hard connectivity to my internationally-based online game..
but when i tried playing it in my friend’s house that only has 1mbps speed in myDSL, never did i experience any disconnects or connectivity issues.. there were a few lag spikes, but it’s both bearable and unavoidable..
final judgment: moving back to pldt myDSL, but getting the 2mbps connection.
I’d like to disagree. It all depends on location. Right now Im using PLDT myDSL plan 999. Here were my problems:
First Three months of installation – VERY LAGGY. ALMOST NO CONNECTION AT ALL. I COULD ONLY GET CONNECTED IN EARLY MORNINGS.
Now we’ve been connected for almost two years, and mind you after those first three months, the disconnections were still there (Although they were less often, but still often). We only got to maximize our connection (No lag, DC or whatsoever) after about a year of being connected. Now the problem persists again. We’ve tried contacting customer service dozens of time (via local 171 and email) and still they dont take us seriously. Three weeks and counting, PLDT myDSL is SHIT.
So back to your post, probably you have slow connection because your too far away from the server or something…
After reading this, I’m also going to get PLDT myDSL. I have been putting up with Sky Broadband’s crappy service since God knows when and I have had nothing but intermittent disconnections. I also took their 3mbps connection and at night it slows down to a speed akin to that of a dial-up connection. Their speeds are really dependent on the time of day.. very unstable indeed. It also doesn’t help that our school requires us to upload our projects online. I almost didn’t get to pass one of my projects because of their impossible upload speed and unstable connection, but when I rushed to my neighbor who was using a PLDT myDSL 999 my file uploaded smoothly and without any problems.
So yeah, I guess PLDT works in our location but sky doesn’t.. Or I may be an isolated case?
Here at home, we’ve had PLDT myDSL plan 990 for about a month, after having Smart BRO plan 999 for around 3 years. It was the biggest mistake we’ve made. Torrent download speed doesn’t even reach 50 kbps. When we were with Smart, we were downloading torrents at 200 kbps.
I live in Alabang. I want our Smart BRO back.
Good to know! I think location plays a big factor with internet speeds. I’m on PLDT plan 999 and I sometimes go up to 400kbps on good days.
Ive never used pldt my dsl but I have had sky broadband for over a year, and I can say from experience it is the worst isp I have ever had in my life. For days at a time their service is down and for about 6 months now its been so slow you can barely surf the net. Hell they even sent a notice saying one month is free because they suck so bad. So for anyone reading this DO NOT GO WITH SKY BROADBAND!!!!!! Save yourself alot of trouble and headaches. I dont know what else to choose though not many choices in the Philippines
sky broadband worst
destiny cable internet were are you
Hello, Pa help nman im planning to apply for plan 990, What should I expect na monthly bills ko, 990 po ba/month (excluding the modem) kasi marami akong naririrnig na yung iba maraming hidden charges.
TIA.
use a net limiter while testing the speed of your internet, you will see the real download speed.
Im tried to subscribe with PLDT MyDSL however, said internet provider didnt cover our area. I live in San isidro hts San isidro, cabuyao laguna. What inet/cable or inet/landline phone would you suggest.. please help.
PLDT always disconnect every 15-30 mins. although they are good for online gaming because of low ping. but if your downloading a huge files, you wont regret skybroadband. the only ISP can offer more than 10mbps. try the 15 day trial and see for your self, you can choose the 12mbps or 24,48 and 112mbps but only for available area.
