bad experience with HostUpon

Me and my girlfriend baught a 2 year hosting plan from HostUpon because they were cheap… and boy did I make a bad choice! The dismal server performance was bearable since it was a shared server and I’m highly certain that they have milked it for more than it’s worth.  But what pissed me off was their sorry excuse for service they had…

We have 3 sites hosted on our account, all of which are just wordpress blogs. 3 months ago they shifted 2 of our sites to a different server without any notice what-so-ever. I only realized it when I tried updating 1 of the sites and the changes I was making weren’t taking effect. After trial and error I figured that they copied 2 of our sites to another server, I managed to connect to the new server with the same credentials and updated my site from there. I asked them about it and they said we got upgraded, that’s why they transferred 2 of our sites… yeah right!

The last straw came last weekend when they suddenly shut down my site by blocking access to the FTP and redirecting 2 of our sites to this page. There was no warning again! After a day of waiting I asked them what happened and their reply was:

Can you please explain what you have been doing on this site as it has crashed due to your usage 4 times in the past 48 hours.

Your memory usage and MYSQL usage was through the roof.

Almost consuming 84% of the entire server.

Please explain -

Now how could this happen? We didn’t do anything on our sites except to post new articles on our respective blogs? And even if it was the fault of our blogs which were working fine the past few months without incident all of a sudden be the culprit… they shut down the sites, and wait for their customers to complain first before notifying them of the problem. They blame their customers because their hosting can’t even handle a simple wordpress blog!

If you’re in the market for a host, STAY AWAY from HostUpon, there are alot better hosts out there with better services. Don’t make the same mistake I did, I thought I could save a few bucks and patronized their services… and I got exactly what I paid for: a cheap host with cheap service.

I think if there’s something wrong with one of their sites all they do is upload an .htaccess file to your site to solve it like so:

RedirectMatch .* http://sunncity.sunncityhosting.com/suspended.page/
Options -Includes -Indexes -ExecCGI
  • Digg
  • del.icio.us
  • Facebook
  • Google Bookmarks
  • email
  • Technorati
  • Twitter

That sucks! I use Green hosting from GreenGeeks for the last year and they’ve been absolutely outstanding. You should give them a shot!

I couldn’t agree more – the same thing happened to me. They disabled all my sites without notifying me while I was on vacation, and then accused me of abusing their terms of conditions for a server crash (caused by a default WordPress install?). Their lousy hosting is only matched by their snippy and aggressive customer support. I moved to Media Temple and haven’t had any problems so far.
