After years of pondering I finally traded in my Z-5300 speakers and got myself its big brother, the Z-5500 Digital. Now I’ve got good speakers, great music and good vibes… all my troubles suddenly felt so insignificant.

The Z-5500 is a THX certified. 5.1 speaker set with a built in decoder for Dolby 5.1 and DTS and multiple input ports. This basically means you can connect the speakers directly to any compatible device. At the moment I have my Z-5500 connected to my Playstation 3 via Toslink (optical) cable and, my computer via direct analog RCA cables. There is also a Coax connection available incase you want to plug it into a DVD/Blu-Ray device. It has a small remote you can use to change the volume, effects, and audio source.

The sound quality is good but not as great when you compare it the likes of Bose, Klipsch, and the like; but for the price of 15,000 I think it’s a good deal. The speakers itself have some umph! and can deliver in terms of volume and bass, though it isn’t really a great speaker set if you’re an audiophile… Then again I still find the price and performance ratio hard to resist.

If you want to a speaker set for your computer, game console, and media player that would deliver decent Dolby 5.1 sound out of the box; this is your best bet at the moment.
