A good way to measure your route is by using Google Earth, it’s free and is accurate to about a couple of meters. Knowing the distance you run and the time it takes you to do it will serve as your benchmark so you can track your progress better. I believe that running smart will give you better results and less pain.
The photo above is my jog path in the subdivision I live in. 1 full round is approximately 1.08Km, the route is a mixed of mild slopes with 1 steep incline which I find really challenging when running long distances. My average lap time is about 5 mins. and 30secs. my fastest lap would be under 5 minutes when I do interval training.
Enjoy your run!
