don’t eat coins!

spot the difference

spot the difference

Last saturday my 22 month old daughter placed a 5 centavo coin in her mouth and accidentally swallowed it. After waiting 2 days for her to poop (without any success) it out we eventually brought her to the hospital to have it checked out.  Though my initial course of action was to buy a laxative first and force her to poop my grand mother insisted that we go the hopital.

To make the long story short, they gave her a laxative (Enema) and x-ray’d her twice, one was to confirm the location of the coin and the second one was to make sure the coin wasn’t present after she pooped.

Though the initial recommendations of the attending doctor at the time was a colonoscopy which would cost us a minimum of 80,000PHP, we still opted to take the laxative, they just let us sign a waver. I’m really disappointed with such a suggestion, because they didn’t even exhaust all other means to get the coin out before doing such a procedure on a toddler, secondly: I doubt that they considered the trauma the child could have to undergo an unnecessary procedure, thirdly: not all people who go to the hospital are well off… We had to insist on taking the laxative first, frankly I think it was just a ploy so that the hospital and/or doctor can make a profit.

The hospital I am pertaining to is St. Lukes, and that’s the last time I’m going to that hospital. If your ailment doesn’t do you in the hospital bill WILL! So bottom line, don’t get sick, or find a decent hospital and doctor with affordable rates. I believe you do not need to spend a fortune just to get good health care.
